Back in my earliest wine days, white zinfandel was one of my favorites. I’m sure this had a lot to do with my limited college income, but I also enjoyed its beautiful color. After many years of exploring other wines and discovering new favorites, I recently decided to return to white zinfandel – for old times’ sake, if nothing else. I immediately realized another aspect that probably drew me to it: it’s sweet and tastes strongly of grapes, one of my favorite childhood treats. But the wines I find myself enjoying most these days are drier and less grape-y than white zinfandel, which is probably why I strayed from it so much in recent years. I’d certainly drink it if someone offered me a free glass (cheers!) but I’m not sure I’ll buy it again for myself. My palate seems to have moved on.
