Today’s DAILY MAIL ON-LINE reports that scientists claim a glass of red wine a day could, among other things, reduce the need for fillings in your teeth. They are citing an article in JOURNAL FOOD CHEMISTRY reporting that red wine contains chemicals which prevent decay.
Wonderful news. Our wines help reduce cardiac problems, can retard the growth of cancers, and certainly encourage more healthful dining. Now they are part of our dental hygiene.
We must caution, however, that much of this same research indicates that acidic white wines may actually erode the enamel on our teeth, so, once again, as always, moderation is to be applauded.
The skins and seeds of red wine grapes have been shown to block the ability of corrosive bacteria to bind with tooth enamel, so this writer is inclined to continue his customary habit of enjoying white and red wine in tandem to offset the effects of white wine with the benefits of red wine. So smile, you’re on a red wine crusade.
