Zinfandel
With Allen Dale 'Ole' Olson
March 23, 2009
Be sure to watch the video at right featuring Dr. Allen Dale 'Ole' Olson and Bobby Wallace, director of fine wine at Big Red Liquors, Bloomington, IN:

The Zinfandel is an exotic black-skinned grape associated primarily with California and is often proclaimed as “America’s grape.” It is true that Zinfandel is not grown to any extent elsewhere, but historians argue that its origin really is not American. And wine lovers seem unable to agree as to its status in the hierarchy of fine wines.

Too bad, as it is a popular grape capable of producing impressive wines. Red wines, we hasten to add. “Zin” lovers will deny the existence of a White Zinfandel and will chant the mantra “Zinfandel is a Red Wine.” Whether or not it is ageworthy is one of the factors affecting its status as a fine wine. Most producers claim it is at its best between four and eight years after bottling.

As for America’s grape… it seems to have reached the United States from Italy where it’s still called Primitivo, and some historians say it actually originated in Croatia. Others claim that America had it first and that it went to Italy from here.

No matter. It’s here to stay – and it has come to play in the fine wine world. Watch the video to hear a conversation about this very special wine variety with Bobby Wallace, Director of Fine Wine at Big Red in Bloomington.
